Synopsis:

The content of this book is intended for mature audiences.
When it is time for souls to meet, there is nothing on earth that can prevent it from happening. That’s what Emma Finch realizes after her first encounter with Luke Myers. A confirmed bachelor and undercover cop, Luke has made his job his life. Since his first love died tragically in a car accident, Luke hasn’t been seriously interested in anyone … until he meets Emma.

Emma is navigating life after her husband of 24 years dies suddenly. Her days as a middle school guidance counselor are filled with hormonal teenagers, while her nights are interrupted by a dream stuck on repeat. A chance meeting with the mystifying detective at a Memorial Day barbecue leaves Emma staring into the same grey eyes that haunt her slumber night after night. She knows her dream will unlock a mystery, and that it’s somehow tied to the tattooed, pierced law-enforcer.

As Emma and Luke’s beautiful love story develops, Emma’s dreams become more frequent and frightening. She’s completely convinced that the enigmatic couple she dreams about each night shares an undeniable connection to Luke and his current undercover assignment. Emma and Luke’s bond is so powerful, they both wonder if maybe they’ve met before. What they learn is that time has a wonderful way of showing them what really matters, and that the universe works in mysterious ways.

Review

Here's the thing...this book is B.A. Dillon's first book and I went into it intrigued and yet a bit skeptical as she's an untried new author. I raised my eyebrows a few times in the first one or two chapters of this book thinking it was written a bit simplistically; I was so wrong!!!  Let me explain; the first 20% or so of the book is really just setting up this really unique story.  It's necessary and trust me, you just want to read it knowing it will get more interesting but the story is just being laid out.  Once that's done, this story becomes much deeper, much richer, and really very good.  The author truly finds her stride and it is worth waiting for!!!
Emma is a middle-school guidance counselor.  She lost her husband about ten months prior to the start of this story and has been grieving his loss.  But she's having dreams, disturbing dreams.  Actually a recurring dream, dreams that aren't letting her sleep well at night.
Luke is an undercover cop.  He's all tatted up and pierced and not your usual clean-cut guy.  But he's a good man.  He goes to his partner's annual BBQ just before going back out on assignment.  There, he meets Emma, a good friend to his partner's wife:
Just one more introduction.  Emma, this ugly mutt is Luke.  He's Shane's partner and the fearless leader of the Street Crimes Unit.  I nod, smile, and extend my hand to his, glancing briefly at his myriad of tattoos....but his smile is infectious and for some reason it takes my breath away.  Locking squarely on the puddle of grey that are his eyes, I am completely lost.  And even more, I feel like he can see straight through me...Taking my hand in his, he mumbles, "Emma, it's nice to meet you."  At this very moment, the effects of my dream that wake me each night choose to return.  I can barely breathe.  I begin to sweat, and a single tear escapes my eye.  Why am I responding as though he's Will from my dream?  What the hell is going on?  I absolutely know he has some connection to my dream.  I feel emotions so powerful my knees buckle a bit as I reply, "Luke, it's a pleasure to meet you, too."  Who is this guy?  Still holding my hand, he asks with great concern, "Emma...are you okay?"
From his perspective:
When I first look into her eyes, I'm sort of taken back a bit.  I almost feel like I know her.  She stands in front of me only a few feet away, and I'm completely captivated by her smile...Taking Emma's small hand in mine, I mutter, "Emma, it's nice to meet you."  I'm struggling to understand and explain what happens next.  Emma's knees buckle a bit, and she slightly gasps, making some excuse about something being in her eye.  Then she bolts - heading directly toward the house.  I, on the other hand, can't move.  I felt a fierce jolt flow through my hand, shocking me to stand up and pay closer attention.  Fuck!  What was that?...
I loved, adored, and will cherish this book within my heart. It is unique. It has humor and grief and is sexy as well as touching. This is not a storyline that an author just churned out by rote formula.  There are some paranormal elements (surprise) so it is a book that the reader needs to maintain a little bit of an open mind toward (as the title implies) but well-worth it in the end. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this book and am very excited a second book in the series will be out in the spring!! (Not a cliffhanger, book two is for another couple). Well-done Ms. Dillon! Amazing for a debut book yet just an amazing book all-around!  I am looking forward to reading more from this author!
