My review: The VAIN series by: Deborah Bladon

*Warning: I have already read the books I am covering, any and all posts may and do contain spoilers.

VAIN is a 3-part book and since each book is so short and I read the full series in one day I’m just going to review the series as a whole.

In my opinion, the series was disappointing for how good the reviews were in my kindle store. The books were short; I could read them start to finish in an hour. The length of the books didn’t give me enough time to become invested in the characters, especially for book 1. I felt like just when I started to get interested and invested it was over. There are 3 books in the series; each book was just as short as the one before it. Considering this, it was a positive that each book was released within a couple weeks of each other. If it hadn’t been that way or if all the books weren’t available to me when I came across the series it would have been a much more aggravating read.

All right, let’s talk dirty. Personally, I am a fan of dirty talk in my book and this series sure had its fill of it. This is probably the strongest rave I have for VAIN.
Excerpt from book 1:

“”Don’t move your hands, Alexa.” His voice trails over my breast right before his teeth sink into the flesh over my nipple. “I’m going to fuck you just like this.”

I grip harder to the pillow above my head. I scream at the assault of tender pain that comes beneath his mouth. “Don’t bite me Noah,” I whisper. “No.”

He ignores my trembling plea and pulls my engorged nipple between his perfect teeth. The razor sharp taste of exquisite pain races through my body at warp speed crashing directly into my core. My legs fall open involuntarily just from the sheer weight of my desire.

“I’m going to make you so wet.” His hand runs up my thigh and traces a path over my folds. “I’ve never been with a woman who got so wet. It’s fucking amazing.”

I moan at the sensation of his skilled hands on my flesh. He’s going to make me forget everything I want and need to forget. Christ, if his mouth and hands are any indication of his skill as a lover I’m going to forget my own name. “Please fuck me.” I can’t temper any of this. My body is physically aching for contact with his.

I feel him shift on the bed and I look down to the condom package in his hand. This is the point where we stalled last time. If we can just get over this hurtle. I’m finally going to get the brass ring or in this case, the perfect, large cock inside of me.

“Your pussy is so wet. Look at how it drips.” He finishes rolling the condom over him before he sips his hand back between my legs. I watch with baited breath as he runs the moisture over his dick.

“Oh, God,” I whisper. “Now, Noah.”

“Now.” He pulls me legs apart and sits between them, his full cock resting in his hand. “I’ve never fucked a woman like you before. Christ, how am I not going to blow my load as soon as I get inside of that?””

Now as you can see from the excerpt this book is not lacking in steam or dirty talk. This part of the writing gets a definite thumbs up from me.

However, I found Noah’s obsession with almost identical blonde haired, blue-eyed girls a little strange. The fact that Alexa looks so much like his past love, Camilla, is freaky to me. I mean I know some people have a type but from the way it’s described it seems more like an obsession than being partial to blondes. Alexa and Camilla both admit they look so much alike that they could be twins, but Noah is firm that they don’t resemble one another. He brushes it under the rug by talking about how different their personalities are. Even one of Noah’s models looks so much like Alexa, she believes the models picture is her own.  It takes a lot of convincing to see that the photo is not of her.

Through out each book a huge story line is that Noah won’t go out in public. He’s a hermit, never leaving his home, ordering food he doesn’t like, so he can have the delivery guy he’s bonded with, come keep him company and for conversation.  It’s a huge issue in the story and for the relationship between Alexa and Noah.  He doesn’t have much progress in overcoming his fear and insecurity during the whole series. Then in the epilogue at the very end, he’s fine, and a functioning member of society. He works with children and has conquered his fear. These books are so short and then he’s fine in just like the last couple pages. The issue of him over coming his fear could have been greatly expanded. I think that is my biggest issue with the series. There are so many story lines that could have gone more in depth and then we would have had a better understanding and also gotten 3 regular sized novels. Other parts I believe could have been expanded: Camilla’s manipulative behavior and so many parts about the attack. Both things could have given us a better understanding of Noah and why he is the way he is. I kept waiting for some big bomb of a secret to drop about Camilla doing something awful to Noah and it never happened.

Alexa’s relationship with Sadie, just a freaking mess!! Who has a best friend relationship like that? Alexa and Sadie have been friends since they were little girls and Alexa tells her nothing, not even after awkward situations keep arising from Alexa keeping secrets from Sadie. The series finishes with Alexa never letting Sadie in on all her secrets. Also when Sadie tells Alexa that she is pregnant her very first initial reaction is jealousy and anxiety. Do we get jealous of our friends? Sure, of course, every one does. But you would think her first response would have been sheer joy and happiness for her friend’s announcement. I would think the jealousy would come a little later upon more reflection. I’m not sure if there was any happy emotion during that scene. This friendship was not the strong bond I enjoy reading about that often appears in many of the books in this genre.
